Verna Jane Blood

May 30, 1928 - February 22, 2018

Verna Jane Blood was reunited with her beloved husband, Warren “Cap” Blood, on February 22, 2018. Together they walk in the Light of the Lord.
Verna Jane was born to Hilma and August Weappa on May 30, 1928, in Sebeka, MN. Verna graduated from Sebeka High School in Sebeka, MN. She then received her bachelor’s degree from University of St. Cloud, St. Cloud, MN.
Family, faith and community were important to Verna. She married her loving husband, Warren “Cap” Blood, on August 18, 1951 in Wadena, MN. Verna and Cap were both teachers. Verna was a physical education teacher and taught in Glennwood, MN; Fargo, ND; Pearsall, TX; and Denison, TX. After moving to Texas, Verna and Cap welcomed their son, Mark, into the world on April 8, 1967. They purchased the oldest home in Denison, renovated it, and registered it as a historical site. When Verna and Cap would go on vacation, they loved to dance to the “Tennessee Waltz.”
The Blood family had an inclusive world view. Cap hosted many trips to Russia during the Cold War until he was diagnosed with colon cancer. Verna cared for her husband until his passing from cancer in 1990.
Verna enjoyed being active and watching sporting events. She was an avid tennis player until her knees gave out. Then, she started swimming every day. For over 50 years, Verna has been a member of the Grace Lutheran Church, Denison, TX. She was the queen of potluck casseroles and cooked for the former Texoma Lutheran Camp and Behavioral Health Center. In addition to her family and faith, Verna was active in the Grayson County Republican Party and the Texoma Pro-Life group.
Verna was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Warren “Cap” Blood. She is survived by her loving son, Mark H. Blood, Denison, TX and two beloved granddaughters, Grace Blood and Emma Blood, Denison, TX.
Memorial service will be held March 5, 2018 at 3:00 pm at Grace Lutheran Church, 2411 Woodlake Rd, Denison, TX 75021, presided over by Pastor Mattil.
In lieu of gifts/flowers, please make a donation in Verna J. Blood’s name to True Option’s Pregnancy Center, Sherman, TX, www.shermanpregnancy.com.

    says:

I was blessed to be neighbors with Cap and Verna for most of my early years in Denison and especially proud to call Mark my best friend. Verna always welcomed me warmly into her home and I still never hear a Minnesota accent that I don’t think of her. She was a kind and patient Mom to what I’m sure she sometimes thought were “two” rambunctious boys and will certainly be dearly missed. Mark, my friend, my deepest sympathies. She was a true gem.
