Both Jerry and I were deeply saddened to hear of Barry’s passing. He was a great teacher, administrator, and had a fabulous sense of humor. We have missed his presence at the college since his retirement. Know that our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. Sincerely, Faye Jones

I extend my deepest sympathies to Barry’s family even as I remember him fondly and celebrate our friendship. He cared fpr his students, and they cared for him. Several of us at El Centro ate lunch together regularly, and quite a bit of joshing went on. Barry was so knowledgeable about the natural world (and other things), we took to thinking of him as our own Buckminster Fuller — and of course we took to calling him “Bucky.” It stuck. Barry loved and was dedicated to his family, and he enjoyed training dogs and horses. He was a great friend, a great teacher, and he will be missed. — Randy Conine

Sincere condolences to Barry’s family. He was one of the first instructors I met when I joined the El Centro family. He was such a great help to our health occ students as they navigating biology courses. A true mentor to our students and to his co-workers as well.

When I was three years old Barry taught me to say Micropterus salmoides which is the scientific name for a black bass. It always caused quiet the conversation whenever I (at age 3) would use that term to describe the fish my dad and I had caught while cleaning them at the boat docks at Mill Creek. Barry also taught me to tell people I got my blue eyes at Montgomery Wards for 50 cents. Memories of duck hunting, dogs, discussions about science, and tall tales told by hunters and fishermen from my childhood are things I hold dear. I’ve often thought Barry influenced my decision to become a teacher. My deepest condolence to his family. Sending my love and prayers during this difficult time.

I am sadden to hear the loss of Barry Bates. He was a cool colleague that was guaranteed to make me laugh when he came by or called the office. He was not going to leave the office without giving me a hard time…all in fun! 🙂 -Angie Trujillo El Centro College Human Resources

Excellent Teacher. His first two semesters of Biology would get you half way though medical school. Dedicated to a Fine Art of Instruction. I had him in 1969 at Grayson College. I still remember most of everything he taught, and recognized his picture immediately after 48 years.

    says:

Barry and I used to talk about farming, cows, and cutting horses, since we were both rural Texas people. Barry was excellent when face to face with students. He truly cared about his students and did everything he could to insure their success. I am glad I had the opportunity to know him and work with him. I am glad for the influence he had on his students. He was always willing to share his talents. A very special person. Benja Allen

Thinking of you and family Cheri. We did not know your husband was sick or had been sick. We did not ever get to know him at the Kennel but reading about him makes us wish we had known him. He must have been a very good teacher. Hope you are doing OK. Know we are thinking about you! Linda & Mike

Barry will be missed in this part of the county. He traveled many miles over these old roads and we watched for that truck to go rolling down the road. Roy and Barry were at Grayson as young and energetic instructors who made the college a great place for all their students. My dad, Preston, respected all the hard work Barry did to train his dogs day after day especially on cold and rainy days. Dad and I even went to watch a dog trial event at the Refuge. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Helen and Roy Renfro

Barry taught along side me in the early 1970s at Grayson County College. We were both in the Science Division, and crossed paths almost everyday. He taught me a lot about the great outdoors, wildlife, and how to enjoy both. Barry was an outstanding Teacher, and great example for Students. Rest in Peace my Friend! Hopefully, late is better than never. From the time I became department chair for psychology in 2007 until Barry retired, we were officed next to each other. Barry was an amazing professor, a respected colleague, and a man I considered a friend. I told Barry years ago that he was my favorite curmudgeon and he responded by saying that I was his female counterpart. I loved Barry Bates as a friend and I will always miss him. He was one of a kind and ” … we shall never see his like again.” (Game of Thrones, Nights Watch funeral oratory). The homily is appropriate for my friend as Barry was truly one of a kind.
