Doris Jean Standley Thomas of Pottsboro, Texas died on Tuesday, February 28, 2017. She was born on September 20, 1927 to Howard Henry and Thelma Carmen Wilmeth Standley in Celina, Texas. She graduated from McKinney Boyd High School in 1945 and attended TWU.
On June 17, 1947, she married Clifford Eldon Thomas, Jr. Together they went to the University of Oklahoma. In Dallas, they raised four daughters. In their later years they retired at Lake Texoma where she attended Lakeway United Methodist Church in Pottsboro.
Doris is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Standley and her husband, Woody Wood; her four daughters, Sandy Dyer and her husband, Terry of Pottsboro, Diana Thomas Ray of Dripping Springs, Texas, Nancy Schuele and her husband, Alan of Austin, TX and Emi Thomas of Pottsboro, Texas. Yaya’s grandchildren, Heather and Mike Leeper, Troy and Jamie Dyer, Cliff and Ashlee Dyer, Corinne Schuele, Eric and Toni Schuele and Austin Thomas Bryan, and nine and a half great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Cliff Thomas; brother, Milton Standley; grandson, Clay Dyer and son-in-law, Paul Henry Ray.
The family lived in Suresnes, France as Cliff worked for Fran Core Lab. Doris championed the challenges of raising four daughters in Europe with grace and courage.
Doris loved the beauty of the Earth. She was a talented oil painter, award winning short story author, storyteller to students and was a member of the choir and a volunteer at the Resale Barn. Doris and Cliff enjoyed many stays in France. Once, they traveled around the world. Mom loved her girls who are so proud to have had a spit-fire, fun loving red head. Thanks to Emi and Mom’s cat, Ella Fitzgerald for their companionship and comfort to mom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Resale Barn, 518 W FM 120, Pottsboro, Texas, 75076.
Memorial services will be held at the Prothro Center at 269 Methodist Lane (N HWY 289) Pottsboro, Texas 75076 on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.
Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson-Moore Funeral Home.
