Johnnie L. Burks, 88, died on Saturday, October 2, 2021 in Mesquite, Texas. Johnnie was born in Canton, Texas on June 23, 1933, the son of Benjamin Claborn and Vernetta (Hearn) Burks.

Johnnie proudly served his country in the United States Army, serving in Germany from 1950-1953. He and Betty Carolyn McBee were married in Dallas, Texas on January 4, 1957, she preceded him in death.

Johnnie was a longtime resident of Pottsboro and Bonham. He was a retired trucker and business owner in Mesquite and Pottsboro where he owned Burks Grocery Store. He was a member of Teamster Local #745 for 20 years. Johnnie turned the grocery store into a pool hall and game room so children would have a place to go after school to occupy their time.

Johnnie is survived by his son, Philip Burks and his wife, Lara of Bonham; daughter, Carolyn Malone and her husband, Rodney of Bonham; grandchildren, Derek Hedgecock, Michelle Hedgecock, Hayley Krampf, Christopher Burks and Rodney Malone, Jr and great grandchildren, Stryder Hedgecock, Landry Mullinax, Harley Malone, Harper Malone and Hudson Malone.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Betty C. Burks; daughter, Scherri Perkins; brother, Robert Railey and sister, Shirley Thomas.

Graveside services with military honors conducted by Fort Hood Military Honor Guard will be 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Georgetown Cemetery in Pottsboro with Scott Gaylon officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson-Moore Funeral Home.
