Denison
Dolores Dean Boyd, a long-time resident of Denison, died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, April 22, 2016. She was born in Monarch, Oklahoma, on June 14, 1931, to Steve Monroe and Mattie Emma Forister. Dolores graduated from NE State Teachers College and taught elementary school in Wyandotte, Oklahoma. It is there where she met Tommy J. Boyd, the love of her life, and they were married on April 24, 1953. Together, they raised a loving family, made life-long friendships, and filled their days with joy, new experiences and togetherness.
Dolores is preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Pauline Viles of Grants, New Mexico, and beloved grandson, Thomas McVay. She is survived by Tommy Boyd, her husband of 63 years, two daughters, Paula McVay of Paris, Texas, and her husband, George McVay, and Diane Vanderbilt of Garland, Texas, and her husband, Bill Vanderbilt, three grandchildren, James McVay of Azle, Texas, and his wife, Jennifer McVay, Caitlin Vanderbilt of Boston, Massachusetts, and Will Vanderbilt of Garland, Texas, and two great-grandchildren, Lee and Emma McVay, along with numerous nieces, nephews and special friends.
Dolores loved family and friends, travel, reading, crafting, volunteering, food and chocolate, and not necessarily in that order. In addition to devoting much of her life and conversation to her husband, children and grandchildren, Dolores spent many years volunteering in her daughter’s schools, PTA, Girl’s Club, Home Hospice, Pink Ladies, and Lion’s Club. She was a very open, caring and giving individual who shared her happiness, kindness, compassion, values and witty sense of humor with everyone she knew and met.
As Dolores requested, a casual “come and go” celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, April 30, 2016, from 1:00-3:00 PM at Johnson-Moore Funeral Home, 631 W Woodard Street in Denison. Friends may stop by to share their favorite stories and memories of Dolores or hear one from the family as there are many. In lieu of flowers, it was Dolores’ wish that donations be made to the Texas Lion’s Children’s Camp (lionscamp.org), Home Hospice of Grayson County (homehospice.org) or a personal favorite charity.
The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away. Dolores Boyd had many special gifts and she freely gave them to all around her. She believed that life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive body, well preserved, but rather to skid in sideways, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out an screaming, “Woo-Hoo! What a ride!”
