Gerald "Jerry" D. Ross

Gerald “Jerry” D. Ross, 74 of Pottsboro passed away on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at his home with his loving family by his side.
The chapel in Pottsboro will open on Sunday at 3 PM and the family will receive visitors from 6-7 p.m. Funeral services will be 10:00 AM Monday, August 25, 2014 at Johnson-Moore Pottsboro Chapel with Rev. Carl Bilderback officiating. Burial will follow at Cedarlawn Memorial Park. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Navy Honor Guard from Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth. Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Ross, Kamran Zafar, Zakary Zafar, Athar Zafar, Jamal Zafar and Eddie Lumpkins. Honorary pallbearers will be the Vets of VFW Post #7873. Following burial at Cedaarlawn Memorial Park, there will be a Celebration of Life service at Pottsboro VFW.
Mr. Ross was born on October 17, 1939 in the Texas Panhandle at Tulia, Texas to Emmit Carol and Clara Powell Ross. He attended schools in Sherman and Ravenna and graduated from Bonham High School in 1958. He received an associates degree from Grayson County Community College. Jerry joined the United States Navy in June of 1958 and spent 10 years in the Navy and 11 years in the Navy Reserves. He retired USNR October 17, 1982 as senior Chief Petty officer (E-8). His tours of duty were in the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres, including two Mediterranean cruises and one Western Pacific during Vietnam with VAH-11 Heavy bombers, and VA-75 AGA intruder “squadrons”. He also worked for Texas Instruments for 28 years as an Engineer Technician and Retired as a Master Electrician Technician in December 1996. Jerry married Sylvia Harper on December 12, 1975 and enjoyed 38 years of a wonderful life together. They enjoyed fishing, hunting and traveling together, especially to South Padre Island where they met and became friends with many people from all over the US and Canada.
Jerry was a member of the American Legion Post #231, The Elks Lodge # 238, and a lifetime member of the VFW Post # 7873. Mr. Ross was of the Protestant faith.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia Ross of Pottsboro; sons, Steve Ross of Omaha, TX and Joe Potts of Huntsville, TX; daughters, Susan Ross of Omaha, TX, Sharon Ross of Bossier, LA and Deborah Zafar and her husband, Athar of Sherman; grandchildren, Nathaniel Lollis, Chance Godwin, Heather Ross, Sabrina Zafar, Jamal Zafar, Kamran Zafar, Zakary Zafar and Michael Ross; 10 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Eddie Lumpkins of Jacksonville, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sandra Ross; grandson, Gabriel Godwin; brothers, Ray Ross and Chuck Ross; and one sister, Ella Mae Perry.
