Irene Dighton

March 6, 1931 - July 15, 2023

Irene Dighton of Denison, Texas, passed away on July 15, 2023, at the age of 92. She was born on March 6, 1931, in Hitchcock, Oklahoma, to Carl Ira and Mary Josephine (Crosley) Mills.

Irene graduated from high school at Hitchcock in 1948 and worked as a telephone operator where she met and married, Kenneth Kammerzell. They were married 18 years and had 3 children together, whom she always took to church, and taught some of their Sunday school classes at the Church of Christ in Yukon, Oklahoma. Before she married, Irene was baptized at Grass Valley, California along with her parents and younger sister, Louise. After moving back to Oklahoma from California, her father was instrumental in starting a small church in Piedmont, Oklahoma.

Irene worked at FAA while raising her family. After a divorce, she retired, moved to Texas and married Harold Gene Dighton, who lovingly took on her 2 teens and a 10 year old as his own. After Harold’s retirement, they moved to Guthrie in 2003. They worshipped at Poplar Warner Church where she loved working with the Dorcus Ladies making quilts for the needy. She also enjoyed gardening and hosting family events. Irene was a loving wife, mother, granny, sister, and friend. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Barensprung of Denison, Texas; son, Kendall Kammerzell of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Larry Mills, and David Mills; 1 sister, Louise Kennett; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold Gene Dighton; son, Tommy Alan Kammerzell; grandson, Tylar Jordan Kammerzell; 2 sisters, and 4 brothers.

A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Marilyn, so sorry to learn of your mothers passing. Irene was a beautiful person inside and out. Just loved her smile. Grief is a process, and I’m here for whatever you need. Sending love to you and your family. If you need or want company, let me know. Lynn & Mark Wachter

I have many fond memories of spending time with Granny Dighton (I was her first grandbaby!), especially as a little girl. We played dress up in her walk-in closet which always made her laugh — and her laugh was so contagious it often brought us all to tears; we spent a summer in their RV touring national parks across many states (still one of my favorite memories of all time); combed the Texas beaches for sand dollars; hung out on her 70s style faux fur chaise lounge; incessantly played her piano (and not very well); swung in her porch swing while watching her do her magic in her beautiful flower gardens; and so many more memories that I will always carry with me. She was there for every major milestone — my first orchestra performance, graduation, Wyatt’s arrival and more. RIP Granny — you are loved and adored. And we will miss you dearly.
