POTTSBORO – John Thomas Gessick, 74, went home to his Lord on Friday, February 25, 2022. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Steve and daughter, Rhonda. He is survived by his wife, Peg; sister, Ann (husband Richard); brother, Tom (wife Molly). Sons, Rod (friend Laura) and Rick; daughter, Robin (friend Iric). Grandsons, Hunter, Kobe, Cole and the General; granddaughters, Kiyana and Taylor, Great-Grand Daughter, Mercedes and many nieces and nephews. He was very proud of Hunter, Kobe, Kiyana and Taylor they were the sunshine in his life.
John loved his Lord, his family, his friends and his country.
John was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania and the family later moved to Elmira Heights, NY where he graduated from high school and enlisted in the Air Force in December of 1965. John was a Viet Nam Combat Veteran and served at several locations in Southeast Asia from 1967 thru 1968. His unit, the 355th Tactical Fighter Squadron was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation by then President Johnson in 1967 for the action against the enemy. John shook hands with Bob Hope during a USO Christmas Show in 1967. He was honorably discharged in 1969 with several medals and commendations. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion and served in several officer positions with both organization and was proud to serve on Honor Guards and Color Guards. Like many of his fellow, Vietnam Warriors who made a decision to serve their country, that decision would ultimately impact his health due to exposure to Agent Orange.
John was active in church. In 1973 he was ordained as an Elder in the Presbyterian Church and later moved to the Methodist Church, where he was active on many committees and mission work. He loved the Lord with all his heart. His daily prayer was to be a Blessing, rather than a burden to others.
In Scouting he was a Scout Master, Round Table Commissioner, Order of the Arrow and Eagle Review Board Member and was proud of all his scouts, especially those who made the rank of Eagle Scout.
He loved sports, bowling, tennis, horseshoes, darts, wrestling but especially softball and played in several championship and state tournaments. When pitching horseshoes or throwing darts with his best friend, Michael, they were unbeatable as a team.
John loved music but was not blessed with the singing voice. He enjoyed playing his drum, guitar and harmonica with Christian Praise Teams and always said that playing Gospel music was like praying twice.
John worked several years at Texas Instruments, starting at the technician level and worked his way up to a Senior Management position. After Texas Instruments, he was hired as the Quality Director at Gustafson, LLC. and helped build a strong quality process system. He later started a consulting firm and helped several companies achieve formal recognition of their quality and safety programs. Prior to his retirement, he spent the last few years traveling to Harrisburg Pennsylvania and Durant Oklahoma, working with Eagle Suspensions and Dayton Parts LLC. He was fondly called “Mr. Q.”
John never really retired. He spent many hours in his shop or repairing broken faucets, replacing furnace filters or needed work at church. He enjoyed working “behind the scenes” and always gave any credit and praise to his friends and co-workers.
John lived a life well lived but more importantly, a life well loved. – Written by John Gessick
