So sorry to hear of Bernie’s passing. Coincidentally, I was lying awake at 3:00AM this morning thinking about him, and wondering where his journey had taken him and Patty. It wasn’t until this afternoon that one of my brothers sent a text to me with the sad news. Crazy how the mind and spirits work! Bernie left a strong impression on me during my junior high and high school years in Central Montana. He was a teacher, mentor, coach (cross country), counselor, and genuinely a good friend. He always struck a great balance of meeting me where I was at as a teenager, earning my trust and confidence, while also doling out the right amount of hard nosed truth when deserved. I appreciated and needed both, especially the hard nosed part as I neared the end of my H.S. years. I have MANY fond memories of our extensive time together. To name a few… The days of him driving alongside of us boys on the Cross Country team as we trained out in the hills around Grass Range, playing music and doling out random coaching tid-bits (he was admittedly NOT a runner or a subject matter expert in that area, but we appreciated the effort!) and our many road trips to meets around the State; our 8th Grade Montana History trip to Yellowstone Park (it snowed a ~foot over night on our camp, and his one man tent collapsed on him – he took it in stride with that classic smile); Bernie joining one of my brothers and me on an Elk hunting trip to Southwestern MT (we got skunked on the Elk hunting, but had some really good laughs!). My thoughts go out to Patty and Bernie’s family. Patty – we were lucky to get both of you into our small town when we did, to “open” our new shop and Home-Ec programs, and in general to add such a nice element to our small community. You made an important difference. Thank you. God Bless, Gregg Descheemaeker
