Sammy Kay Whisenhunt

February 12, 1964 - January 23, 2024

Sammy Kay “Neemae” was a beautiful stubborn soul that will be missed by so many. She was the kind of woman who could light up any room when she walked into it and always had a smile on her face. She could make an adventure out of anything and always tried to find the positives in any situation. She was a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. If you’d ever asked her what her biggest success was in life, she would have told you becoming a mother was her greatest accomplishment. However, amid the obstacles she faced in life, she rose above them and put herself through nursing school, while taking care of her youngest daughter. During her time as an LVN, she was well-revered by physicians, co-workers, and her patients.

After leaving the nursing world she decided to live life on her terms for a little while and just do whatever she wanted to. She took a lesson from her youngest daughter that it’s ok to not give a hoot and ran with it to the fullest until one day she found herself wanting something more again. She worked at Matt’s Store in Sherman for the last 3 years of her life and everyone who encountered her was touched by her inner joy and adored her bigger-than-life personality.

Sammy was met on the other side by her Mother Mary Jo-Evelyn Taylor and Father Alphard Don Whisenhunt as well as her big sister Kimberly Diane Nowlin and others.

She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Hill and her husband Joe Hill as well as 5 grandchildren Haylie Monk, Victoria Monk, Gweneth and Garrett Hill, and Emily Hill. Her youngest daughter Elizabeth Burson and husband Larry Trevathan and her 1st grandchild Xavier Walker and wife Elizabeth Walker as well as two great grandsons. She also leaves behind four sisters, and one brother: Kelly Collins with her husband Johnny Collins, and her baby sister Patty Dodson and her husband J.C. Dodson, Laura Sands, and her husband Steve Sands as well as Denise Saxen-Broyles and her only brother Timothy Cline and wife. Sammy was also survived by seven nieces and nephews along with 5 great-nieces and nephews. She had many friends and took a lot of street kids under her wings.

She will be greatly missed and is greatly loved by all.

A remembrance gathering for friends and family will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, February 10, 2024, at Johnson-Moore Funeral Home, 631 W Woodard Street, Denison, Texas 75020.

Rest easy dear cousin. I feel privileged to have gotten to work with you and Diane at Leonard years ago. Go enjoy the card or domino game that’s going on right now. Give my dad a hug for me.
